Examples of Hohokam pottery produced between 150 and 1450 AD, on display at the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park in Phoenix, Arizona. Please click any photo in the set for enlarged views.
The photo at top may seem an odd choice for presentation in the set in large format. It is an example of Hohokam everyday utility ware, and at first glance the vessel fragments look plain and undistinguished. But they display a significant innovation that Hohokam potters capitalized on. The shards sparkle with reflective flecks of pulverized mica that the potters impressed into the surface of the wet clay before it was fired. Their glittery pottery became a desirable trade commodity throughout the southwest. Bling sells.
The animal motifs in panels 2, 3, and 4 show stylized representations of a heron, horned lizard, and hummingbirds.

Pueblo Grande, No. 1
Photos in this set were taken at the Pueblo Grande Museum and Archaeological Park in Phoenix, Arizona. Hohokam people settled here around around 450 BC, and inhabited the site until about 1450 AD. The ruins are located within view of Phoenix’s Sky Harbor International Airport. It’s an odd sensation to watch planes take off and land while walking the paths around this ancient place.
