Mexican fan palm (Washingtonia robusta), in Peoria, Arizona. These are southern Sonoran natives, whose range has been pushed northward for use as ornamental trees in metro Phoenix. They were also the first palms introduced to Los Angeles, where they are now icons of the landscape.
The shaggy, unkempt trees in this photo are growing on the back acreage of a nearby ranch. Most homeowners here keep their palms better groomed. It is an odd neighborhood I’m in. I can walk ten minutes in one direction to the local Cheesecake Factory, or the baseball stadium where the Seattle Mariners hold spring training. A ten minute walk in the opposite direction takes me to Old Arizona ranches with horses and stables, chickens and orange groves.
