Lézard du Jour: Desert spiny lizard (Sceloporus magister ♂), displaying flamboyant mating coloration, in Tempe, Arizona. This mature male lizard was about 5.5 inches long (14 cm) from snout to vent.

Killdeer (Charadrius vociferus), in Papago Park, Tempe, Arizona.
This bird is the parent of this little fellow. Mother killdeer was displeased with the attention I was showing her young brood of three chicks. She flew close to distract me from her babies. When she landed she made exaggerated displays of fluffing her feathers and settling on the ground – an attempt to fool me into thinking her nest was nearby.
