This is a fall tradition I miss: driving into the country to a farm stand to buy pumpkins for

Hallowe’en and pies. We visited Neil’s family’s farm several times over the years. He was given a plot for growing and harvesting pumpkins, and he managed sales on his own – with great panache. 

In Roanoke County, Virginia, October 1981. My best recollection is that the farm was on the Mt. Tabor/Newport Road, not far from Dragon’s Tooth on the Appalachian Trail.
