For geopsych: Mayapples (Podophyllum peltatum) emerging in the shade garden. I promise, yours won’t be far behind.  

To me, these are the surest sign of spring. The little shoots pop up so suddenly, and if it’s sunny, by the next day the palmate leaves begin to unfurl. Both of these plants will produce a single leaf without flower or fruit. Fruits are only found on plants with two or more leaves.

Bonus Etymology: The specific name peltatum is derived from the Latin word pelta, for a small shield, used in botanical names to describe leaves that are supported like an umbrella by a stem on the underside of the leaf.
