Phainopepla (Phainopepla nitens
♀), at the Desert Botanical Garden, Phoenix, Arizona. There were several pairs of these birds in the garden, but the males were too busy swooping and chasing and showing off to pause for a photo. A phainopepla’s crest is unmistakable, even in silhouette, like an untidy punk mohawk.
