Painted Desert Series, No. 1.
Badlands bother me. I become disoriented, and my eyes cast about uneasily, searching for the solid and familiar. The rills and gullies constantly draw my attention downwards, toward clotted washes and watercourses choked with silt. I have never been in badlands during a downpour. The prospect frightens and alarms me – I am wary of watching the world erode away. The colors entrance and amaze, but they also repel. Badlands are not places made for people, or rather, people are not made for the badlands.
I can’t wait to return.
