Future sand: Deformed gypsum crystals on a dry playa bed, at White Sands National Monument, New Mexico. Gypsum leaches from the shallow water table at the White Sands playas following spring and summer rains. When the standing water evaporates a crunchy crust of gypsum crystals are left at the surface.
