A ketch furling sails at Hospital Point, in Portsmouth, Virginia. The domed Greek Revival building in the background is Building 1 of the Portsmouth Naval Medical Center, constucted in 1827. I was on the passenger ferry between Norfolk and Portsmouth when I took this shot. It was a lovely windy day, perfect for sailing.

Foremast rigging on the barque HNoMS Statsraad Lehmkuhl, docked at the Otter Berth in Norfolk, Virginia.

The ship pulled into Hampton Roads this morning at dawn in a steady rain. This evening under lowering skies it hosted a formal party for Navy brass and NATO bureaucrats – the decks were crowded with more medals and gold braid than I have seen in one place in quite a while. (My invitation must have been lost in the mail. I’m sure I’ll get an embarrassed phone call in the morning.) I hope to get some deck-top photos before it leaves port in a few days.
