While I worked in the garden today I watched this little wasp dash in and out of the hollow bamboo stake where she is building a brood chamber. I am easily distracted, but she seemed to be much more intent and serious about her business. 

While I worked in the garden today I watched this little wasp dash in and out of the hollow bamboo stake where she is building a brood chamber. I am easily distracted, but she seemed to be much more intent and serious about her business. 

Eastern cicada killer (Sphecius speciosus), in Portsmouth, Virginia.

This is one of the largest wasps found in North America – about 1.5 inches long (4 cm). As their common name suggests they hunt cicadas, usually taking them in flight before depositing them in solitary underground burrows to feed their larvae.
