Crane fly.
Here in the Sonoran Desert almost all of our streams are ephemeral, so insects that spend long larval phases in flowing water – like the tipulid flies – are rare or uncommon. With this year’s abundant rain and snow melt the washes and watercourses are running, and we are seeing crane flies unusual numbers.
See this ancient post for an explanation of why we use the naming convention crane fly instead of cranefly.
