Male and female jojoba flowers (Simmondsia chinensis), at the Glendale Main Library Xeriscape Demonstration Garden, Glendale, Arizona.
Etymology note: Despite it’s specific name, jojoba is a plant of the desert southwest, and is not remotely Chinese. The botanist who originally assigned scientific epithets for the plant misread a collection label, mistaking a scrawled Calif for China. Jojoba is a transliteration of the O’odham name for the plant: Hohowi.
