Desert cottontail rabbit (Sylvilagus audubonii), at the Riparian Preserve at Water Ranch, Gilbert, Arizona. This is the most rabbity place I have ever seen. Between the green stuff and the steady supply of mesquite pods from trees in the dense bosques, the rabbits here are abundant, well-fed, fat, and sassy. And they are surprisingly fearless. There are many walkers with dogs, but all of the canine visitors are kept on leashes. These are rabbits that have never felt the thrill of being chased.
