As inlandwest attests, if rabbitbrush is blooming summer must be near its end. It is the western equivalent of the goldenrods back east. Unfortunately, rabbitbrush seems to be an all-purpose generic moniker for low-growing yellow fall flowers. In fact, there are about twenty western species in three genera that are all called rabbitbrush. I think the flowers in these photos, taken at Walnut Canyon National Monument, are in the genus Ericameria.
