Aspen Update.

A few views of the color development at the San Francisco Peaks. Please click any photo in the set for enlargements. These were taken midweek on a morning with heavy frost on the mountain tops. The next day there was a light dusting of snow – the first of the season. Peak color is very fleeting, dazzling for just a few days before the leaves are all stripped away.

The top and bottom photos are views of Humphreys and Agassiz Mountains. The smoke is from controlled slash pile burning.

Yesterday Thing 2 and I rode the chairlift at the Arizona SnowBowl ski resort to the top of Agassiz Peak for a little high-altitude aspen viewing. At 11,500 feet (3,500 meters) we were just a thousand feet below the pinnacle, with splendid views of the surrounding forests and volcanic mountains. Kendrick Peak can be seen in the bottom photo, and in the far distance, the dark rim of the Grand Canyon, over 60 miles away (95 km).

I went in search of fall color today, hiking to the Alfa Fia Tank on the slopes of Humphrey’s Mountain in northern Arizona. Humphrey’s is the highest point in the state, topping off at 12,700 feet (3850 meters).

The mountain will soon be snow-covered for the rest of the year. Now it is getting decked out in aspen yellow, especially on its northern slopes. My hike today was on the western face, at an altitude of only 8,750 feet (2650 meters). To the west and south the aspen are just beginning to turn. The Alfa Fia Tank is a small, spring-fed impoundment, but it reflects the surrounding peaks and forest beautifully.
