My favorite Chicago hotel is the Blackstone, with the green-clad roof at the left in this photo. In a city of giant buildings it is only 300 feet tall (90 m), so the clouds on this day were very low indeed. The photo was taken from Adler Planetarium.

Picnic shelters at White Sands National Monument.
The shelters were designed by architect Lyle Bennett under the auspices of the Works Progress Administration, sometime in the mid-1930s. Bennett is best known for his work on grander visitor facilities. He employed Pueblo Revival style designs for the White Sands Visitor Center, and for the Desert Inn at Petrified Forest National Park, though he had a clear affinity for more contemporary design. There are dozens of these shelters on pullouts throughout White Sands. Unlike most national parks, there are few restrictions on visitors wandering off trails, since the dune landscape is constantly renewed by wind and blowing sand. Visitors are actually encouraged to climb and play on the dunes.
