Watercourse Series, No. 1.

All of the photos in this series were taken at the Montezuma Well unit of the Montezuma Castle National Monument, in Yavapai County, Arizona.

Water from the massive sinkhole passes through cracks in the limestone wall. Where the water emerges from the swallet the ancient Sinaguan inhabitants built irrigation canals to divert the water to their crops. This prehistoric canal, built sometime in the 8th century, has been stabilized and restored by the Park Service.

Riffle No.1.

All photos in this set are long hand-held exposures. I was experimenting with capturing the energy and movement of water through a narrow water-carved channel in the red bedrock.

Photographed at Wet Beaver Creek in the Coconino National Forest, Yavapai County, Arizona.
