Watercourse Series, No. 1.

All of the photos in this series were taken at the Montezuma Well unit of the Montezuma Castle National Monument, in Yavapai County, Arizona.

Water from the massive sinkhole passes through cracks in the limestone wall. Where the water emerges from the swallet the ancient Sinaguan inhabitants built irrigation canals to divert the water to their crops. This prehistoric canal, built sometime in the 8th century, has been stabilized and restored by the Park Service.
