White snakeroot (Ageretina altissima), at the George Washington Carver National Monument, Diamond, Missouri.

As the common name suggests, the plant is toxic. It produces the chemical tremetol, which can accumulate in the milk and flesh of cattle that eat the plant, and in turn lead to toxicity in people who consume the contaminated animal products. It is thought that Nancy Hanks Lincoln (mother of Abraham) died of drinking milk contaminated with tremetol

Differential grasshopper (Melanoplus differentialis), at Tumacácori National Historical Park, Santa Cruz County, Arizona.

We saw grasshoppers in astonishing numbers at Tumacácori. When we walked through the orchard there were little explosions of leaping hoppers with every footfall, and the quince trees were covered with them.

To see more amazing shots from the grasshopper population boom in southern Arizona this year you should visit (and follow!) textless’s tumblr. You will not find better photos of the local insect life anywhere.
