Scenes from the boneyard.

At the Fairbank, Arizona cemetery, overlooking the San Pedro River in Cochise County. The ghost town is now part of the San Pedro Riparian National Conservation Area, administered by the Bureau of Land Management. The community was an important rail stop for silver from Tombstone mines, and later for copper from Bisbee.

For those with spooky dispositions, there is a spectral flare over the grave in the final photo in the set that I promise was not visible through my lens when I took the shot. Whooooooooo.

Lorraine Hunt Lieberson (d. 2006) singing “New Scenes of Joy” from Handel’s Oratorio Theodora (1750). This recording is from 2004, with the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment, directed by Harry Bicket.

If there are angels, I suppose this is what they sound like when they sing.

New scenes of joy come crowding on
While sorrow fleets away,
Like mists before the rising sun
That gives a glorious day.
