La Grande Vitesse, Alexander Calder, 1969.
Calder’s stabile was fabricated in Tours, France, then shipped in pieces to Grand Rapids where it was assembled and painted on the city hall plaza.
The work was commissioned and purchased with funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, so if you were paying taxes in 1969 (I was) you helped pay for this remarkable art. Thank you! Your investment makes all of our lives better.
North American beaver
(Castor canadensis), at Fish Ladder Park, Grand Rapids, Michigan.
This beaver is habituated to the urban experience, making itself at home in the fish-ladder’s flume. A worried park visitor we met insisted that the beaver was trapped in the swift water, so we dutifully made calls to animal welfare authorites in Grand Rapids, who let us know that the fish ladder is his regular spot, and that they check in on him from time to time to make sure he’s OK. We were told that they field calls about the beaver from anxious visitors several times each week, so I guess it’s not quite time to give up all faith and hope for humanity.
